Today we got to take the visual literacy lessons from the classroom to the field (which was also the classroom in our case). Drew and I recorded our second weekly assignment in the afternoon with limited knowledge of cameras and how to set up the scenes, but I think we pulled it off pretty nicely. We followed what we learned in class, of course. We set up the shots so we’d be in the golden ratio or for the subject to sit in the thirds. The chairs and lights were shifted around to shape the face with shadows. We tested audio over and over and made minute, probably pointless, changes to the gain and position of the microphones. I didn’t expect to take up almost the entire timeslot just to film 2 minutes of the final product, but it turns out there are a lot of things to consider and tend to in a film set. We each recorded around 8 minutes of footage including questions and b-roll, so editing and trimming the videos will definitely take up a large portion of this week’s evenings.
In the CHW’s after-dinner meeting, I think we had our most productive meeting yet. You had to be there, though.
